Chapter 12

The next hour was filled with a lot of… what Lock could only describe as nonsense. The general premise of Magister Penny’s lesson was to charge the spellrod without touching it. First, they started by placing their hand an inch away then two inches, and so on. They whole time Penny jabbered on about… stuff. The ocean, the mountains, water and chall-kras or chikras. Whatever something that sounded like an insect.

By the end of the hour he could charge his spellrod from a little over a foot. That didn’t seem like much but hey, it was the first day. After that exercise she ran the class through the series of movements she performed in her demonstration. Minus the flip and the lightning. The whole process felt an awful lot like the sword drills his father forced on him. The main difference was the pace, sword drills were done much faster which you think would make them more difficult.

But that was not in the least bit true. Going slow was painful. His muscles burned in a way he didn’t know they could. He was used to feeling strong, but at this slow pace he had to strain his muscles to keep from falling over. Heck, a few times he caught one of his legs shaking uncontrollably. He was losing his mind trying to match Penny’s pace. It was impossible, especially when everyone around him seemed to go at a different speed.

If that frustrating exercise wasn’t enough, Penny then had them do some closed eye breathing. Yes breathing. With your eyes closed. Closed eye breathing. Again, closed eye breathing was their lesson. Someone was paying for them to sit in the grass with their eyes closed, and breath.

Ridiculous.

Lock was sitting there with his eyes closed until someone tapped him on the shoulder, “You want to grab lunch?”

He opened his eyes to find that he was the only person still sitting and over half the class was gone. Other than Lucas, who had stayed behind to get him.

“Definitely,” answered Lock then as if on cue, his stomach growled.

Lucas bobbed his head and offered his hand.

Lock waved him off and tried to push himself off the ground. His legs almost gave out.

Lucas gave time for Lock to correct his balance, “Something wrong?”

“Yeah, my muscles are burnt,” said Lock, “How are yours not?”

“Eh,” said Lucas as he shrugged, “Taking it slow. I’ve got leveling today.”

“Ah, mine’s tomorrow,” said Lock.

“Anything else on your schedule for today?” asked Lucas.

“Spellwork at one,” said Lock, “And Lunch.”

“Me too,” said Lucas, “I was going to skip it.”

“Skip it?” asked Lock, “Are you serious?”

“Yes,” said Lucas, “Then again my uncle would be mad if he knew.”

“Yeah, and you’d miss the first day of class. After what Magister Penny did, I can’t imagine what we’ll see in spellwork,” said Lock.

Lucas shrugged again, “Magister Cadence will not put on a show.”

“Still you don’t want to get off on the wrong foot with him,” said Lock.

Lucas waved his hand, “Oh yeah, thanks for waking me up this morning.
